Language Arts

Exciting and challenging experiences await the 3rd graders at our school. In Language Arts we will study a variety of genres, explore reading strategies, build reading fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary, and grammar skills. Students will read literature selections and informational articles. A variety of written experiences will help student sharpen their writing skills. Students will learn narrative, informational, and opinion writing structures. Goleta history and Chumash research reports will enhance their writing experience.


Our Bridges math program is engaging, rigorous, and comprehensive. Students will learn concepts through direct instruction, investigations, and games. Skills include multiplication and division, three digit addition and subtraction with regrouping, fractions, geometry, graphing and data analysis, and measurement.

Social Studies

Our district’s social studies program is Reflections. Our students will learn about California geography, Chumash history, California missions, Spanish explorers, and national symbols.


Science includes forces and interactions, life cycles, animal adaptations, weather, and habitats.



Homework includes math and language arts review, writing, and daily reading.


Field Trips

Students will travel to important county locations such as the Santa Barbara Natural History Museum, Mission, Stow House and Botanic Gardens to gather a firsthand appreciation of the rich historical community in which we live. We also have special third grade presentations from the Fire Safety House and the Camino Real Naturalists and Historical Interpreters.

Music, Science, Art, Technology, and Physical Education specialists round out our rich third grade curriculum. We hope you will have an opportunity to visit the third grade classes at La Patera School.
