The science specialist program at La Patera Elementary School is based on the Full Option Science System™ (FOSS) philosophy. This program is designed to engage students in science through active learning. We are combining the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) with the integration of the Common Core State Standards. Every FOSS investigation follows a similar design to provide multiple exposures to science concepts through active investigation, including outdoor experiences, occasional recording in science notebooks to answer the focus question, and classroom reading supported by each grade’s teachers.
The science specialist program includes three modules for each grade level, with specific offerings in Physical Science, Earth Sciences, and Life Science, including the ones listed below:
Grade 6-Planetary Science, Human Systems Interactions, Earth History, Weather and Water.
Grade 5-Mixtures and Solutions, Earth and Sun, Living Systems.
Grade 4-Energy, Soils, Rocks, and Landforms, Environments.
Grade 3-Motion and Matter, Water and Climate, Structures of Life.
Grade 2-Solids and Liquids, Pebbles, Sand and Silt, Insects and Plants.
